Finding Dorothy

Finding DorothyFinding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Very few books cause me to almost cry and get teary-eyed but Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts did. Letts exquisite writing and beautiful characterization did just that. In one scene, where Letts is describing a young girl living on the Dakota Territory prairie (which later became both North Dakota and South Dakota I almost broke down and cried as my mother's heart truly felt for the suffering of the young girl. Her character, and the scenery was so well-written I could see and feel the desolation and anguish felt by the young female character.

Her book is historic fiction that tells the fictional story of how the book and move called The Wizard of Oz came to be. The book was written by L. Frank Baum who based his book on his experiences of living in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

The main female character, Maud Baum, helps tell the story and she starts her story in Chapter 1 when she drives to the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lot to make sure the Wizard of Oz movie stays true to the story written by her husband. Later Maude Baum's story flashes back to an earlier time to tell about earlier incidents which lead to the writing of The Wizard of Oz. Her book is interwoven with both present and past incidents creating a wonderful story that I would describe as a page turner.

Please buy this book as you not be disappointed by Letts book. Her writing and characterization is the best I've read in.a very long time.

Recommend.

A Girl's Guide to Missiles: Growing Up in America's Secret DesertA Girl's Guide to Missiles: Growing Up in America's Secret Desert by Karen Piper
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Very few books make me angry but A Girl's Guide to Missles by author Karen Piper angered me enough that I quit reading her book. I returned her book to Amazon due to Piper's poor research and due to the book's poor editing.

I have a deep understanding of China Lake history and how China Lake operates. China Lake was founded by the United States Navy during World War II. Today, China Lake supports national defense through research and development. A little known fact is China Lake's role in developing the popular Glow Stick. Glow Sticks were originally developed to help with military search and rescue, if I remember right, and are now used by many children to promote Halloween safety. Dare I digress.

Piper reports in her book her father designed the Sidewinder missile. In fact, the Sidewinder missle was conceived by Dr. William McClean in the mid-1950s. Many engineers and scientists have worked on the Sidewinder program throughout the years. McClean headed the engineering team though. Piper also relates her living at China Lake was filled with low flying aircraft near public areas, ordnance laying around, and how there were no religious services available at China Lake. All these things are incorrect. Naval aviators take great pride in flying safely. In fact, a local school was named after a naval aviator who elected to ride his failing jet to the ground to prevent hitting the elementary school. Ordnance testing is done on distant ranges and nowhere near public facilities including China Lake housing. Religious services have always been part of China Lake. The All Faith Chapel, I do believe was one of the original buildings constructed, and has been providing services to Catholics, Jews, Muslims and Protestants who live and work at China Lake.

There are other fact-based issues wrong with this book which I won't detail here.

If you do read this book, do realize her book is based on her personal experiences and biases. The historical research is a bit lacking and suspect. As I wrote earlier I returned the book as it was poorly researched, edited and written.

Do not recommend.

The Chef's SecretThe Chef's Secret by Crystal King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Chef's Secret by Crystal King is a bit mystery, a bit romance, a bit history tossed in with a potful of a cook's life making it a wonderful book to read. I won't give away the plot except to write if you love history and cooking you will love this book. You will also love this book if you loved reading Feast of Sorrow, written by King, and a book I adored too.
